ARDMORE, Okla. — Although meteorology encompasses more than tornadoes, entering one is Reed Timmer’s favorite moment during the chase. Most people have never experienced a tornado from the inside, and most people who have survived a tornado weren’t actually seeking the encounter. Timmer is not most people.
A storm-chasing veteran for more than 20 years, Timmer, who has a doctorate in meteorology, will present “The Science of Storm Chasing” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, at the Ardmore Convention Center to conclude the 2018 Profiles and Perspectives Community Enrichment Series season. Sponsored by the Noble Foundation, each Profiles and Perspectives event is free of charge and open to the public.
“Dr. Timmer is known around the world as one of the best storm chasers,” said Adam Calaway, Noble Research Institute director of communications and public relations and chair of the Profiles and Perspectives Committee. “He presents tornadoes from a perspective most of us have never imagined. He combines an adventurous spirit with a scientist’s focus and attention to detail as he pursues a better understanding of tornadoes.”
From rockets and drones that are launched into tornadoes to the role of storm chasers in the severe weather warning process and disaster response, Timmer’s presentation will cover many topics related to chasing, including the science of tornadoes and how to stay safe during severe weather. He will also discuss the record-breaking 2017 hurricane season from a chasing and climatology perspective, including the wind and pressure data recorded in the intense eye walls of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
